If you heard stories from older engineers about hauling a suitcase of binders into the PE exam, that is no longer how the current NCEES computer-based exam works. The modern PE exam provides the approved reference handbook and the design standards listed in the official exam specifications electronically. Personal copies of books, printed standards, notes, binders, and marked-up references are not allowed in the testing room.

Short version: study from the exact NCEES exam specifications for your discipline, download the free NCEES handbook from your MyNCEES account, and practice searching PDFs before exam day. The exam is not open-book in the old paper-exam sense.

Pick your PE exam and get a practical lookup map: relevant reference lanes, section families, search terms, and how to practice them. No fixed page-number promises, because PE standards and PDF editions vary by exam date.

Practice-Map Reference Sections by PE Discipline

We now map shipped PE practice rows to in-app quick reference sections and subsections. This is useful for review because it tells you which reference lane to open first after a miss. It still avoids fixed page-number promises for PE standards and codes, because supplied PDFs and editions vary by discipline and exam date.

Discipline Most-used in-app reference sections Example topic lanes Map coverage
PE Civil Transportation Traffic Engineering, Horizontal Design, Vertical Design, Drainage Traffic Engineering -> Traffic Engineering; Horizontal Design -> Horizontal Design; Vertical Design -> Vertical Design 212 subsection matches; 172 section-only; 0 unmatched
PE Civil Structural Loads and Load Applications, Structural Analysis, Codes and Construction, Concrete Design Loads and Load Applications -> Loads and Load Applications; Structural Analysis -> Structural Analysis; Codes and Construction -> Connections and Details 199 subsection matches; 168 section-only; 0 unmatched
PE Civil WRE Hydraulics - Closed Conduit, Hydrology, Wastewater Collection and Treatment, Hydraulics - Open Channel Hydraulics (Open Channel) -> Hydraulics - Open Channel; Water and Wastewater Treatment -> Wastewater Collection and Treatment; Hydrology -> Hydrology 126 subsection matches; 205 section-only; 0 unmatched
PE Electrical Power Circuit Analysis, Transmission and Distribution, Electrical Safety, Protection Circuit Analysis -> Circuit Analysis; Protection -> Protection; Transmission and Distribution -> Transmission and Distribution 222 subsection matches; 138 section-only; 0 unmatched
PE Computer Engineering Computer Architecture, Digital Systems, Software Engineering, Computer Networks Computer Networks and Cybersecurity -> Computer Networks; Computer Architecture -> Computer Architecture; Digital Devices -> Digital Systems 358 subsection matches; 149 section-only; 0 unmatched

What NCEES Provides During the PE Exam

NCEES describes the current PE Civil exam resources this way: it provides an electronic reference handbook and all specified design standards during the exam, and those are the only reference materials candidates may use. NCEES also notes that the handbook and design standards used on the exam are searchable PDF files with linked chapters for navigation.

That same pattern applies across the CBT PE exams: your allowed references are not whatever you bring; they are the electronic materials NCEES supplies for that specific exam and exam date. The exact list changes by discipline and sometimes by effective date, so always download the current specifications from the official NCEES page before you buy standards or build a study plan.

As of May 5, 2026, the current PE Civil design-standard information on NCEES is effective as of April 1, 2024, and NCEES has also posted future Civil materials for exams beginning in April 2027. If your exam date is near a standards transition, check the effective date twice before buying references.

PE Civil: Handbook Plus Discipline-Specific Standards

For PE Civil, NCEES provides the PE Civil Reference Handbook plus the design standards listed in the specifications for the depth area. Civil candidates should treat the specs as a shopping list and a navigation checklist, especially for Structural and Transportation where external standards are heavily used.

Depth References to Practice Study Habit
Structural PE Civil Reference Handbook plus structural design standards such as ACI, AISC, ASCE 7, NDS, masonry, and building-code references listed by NCEES. Practice opening the right standard before solving. Load path and limit state recognition matter as much as arithmetic.
Transportation PE Civil Reference Handbook plus transportation standards such as the Green Book, HCM, MUTCD, Roadside Design Guide, HSM, and other standards listed in the current specs. Build a table of which reference owns each problem type: sight distance, capacity, warrants, signs, roadside clear zones, and crash prediction.
WRE PE Civil Reference Handbook plus any WRE-specific design standards NCEES lists for the exam date. Master handbook navigation for open-channel flow, hydrology, water/wastewater, groundwater, and environmental calculations.

Start with the official NCEES PE Civil exam page, then open the specifications for your depth area. Do not assume a prep course, an old book, or a coworker’s binder uses the same standard editions as your exam date.

PE Electrical Power: Handbook Plus Code Standards

The PE Electrical Power exam is especially reference-heavy because code lookup is part of the exam. NCEES lists the PE Electrical Power Reference Handbook plus code standards for the specifications effective October 2025, including NFPA 70 (NEC 2020), ANSI C2 (NESC 2017), NFPA 70E-2021, NFPA 497-2021, NFPA 499-2021, and NFPA 30B-2023.

For PE Power, your reference practice should be split into two tracks: calculation formulas in the PE Power Reference Handbook and code navigation in NEC, NESC, NFPA 70E, and the hazardous-location standards. If you only solve formula problems, the code questions will feel slow. If you only tab a personal NEC, the exam PDF interface will still surprise you.

For a deeper code-navigation guide, see our PE Electrical Power reference documents article.

PE Computer Engineering and Other Electrical/Computer Exams

For PE Electrical and Computer exams outside Power, start with the NCEES Electrical and Computer exam page and download the specifications for the exact exam. Some exams lean more heavily on the NCEES handbook and fewer external standards, but the rule is the same: the official specification controls what will be provided and what topics can be tested.

How to Practice With PE References Before Exam Day

  1. Download the current NCEES specification first. Save the PDF for your exact discipline and effective date. Highlight the reference list and standard editions.
  2. Use the NCEES handbook during every practice set. Even if you know the formula, look it up while studying until the navigation path is automatic.
  3. Practice with PDF search, not only paper tabs. The exam interface uses electronic references. Your beautiful paper tabs will not be there.
  4. Build a lookup map. Write down where common problem types live: NEC Article 250, AASHTO sight-distance tables, ASCE 7 load combinations, ACI development length, or WRE open-channel formulas.
  5. Time your lookups. A reference item you can find in 30 seconds is a tool. A reference item that takes 4 minutes to find becomes a time-management problem.

What Changed From the Old Open-Book PE Exam?

The old paper PE exam rewarded candidates who built large binders, tabbed personal manuals, and knew where their own notes lived. The CBT PE exam rewards a different kind of fluency: recognizing the governing reference, opening the right chapter, searching the right term, and applying the provided material without personal annotations. That is a better match for real engineering work in some ways, but it means your study process has to change.

Bottom Line

Do not prepare for the PE exam as if it is still a suitcase-of-books test. Prepare for a closed-room, computer-based exam where the correct NCEES-supplied PDF is your reference library. Download the current specifications, study with the supplied handbook, learn the design-standard list for your discipline, and make reference navigation part of every practice session.
