Printable FE Mechanical Lookup Map
FE Mechanical Handbook 10.6 Page Guide
Use this as a compact navigation sheet while you practice. It does not reproduce the NCEES handbook. It points you toward the official handbook sections that are most likely to matter for FE Mechanical problems, then gives you search cues so you can find the right equation faster.
FE Mechanical is front-loaded with thermodynamics, fluid mechanics, and heat transfer, and those three sections (pp. 149-230) sit back-to-back in the handbook. The slow trap is jumping to Mechanical Engineering (pp. 442-472) for an energy problem when the governing relation is in the thermal-sciences block. Decide whether a problem is a property lookup or a design calculation before you start searching.

Pages Worth Memorizing by Location
- Thermodynamics pp. 149-186: property relations, cycles, mixtures, HVAC, and combustion lookup lane.
- Fluid Mechanics pp. 187-214 and Heat Transfer pp. 215-230: pair flow, pump/fan, and heat-rate problems with the right section before calculating.
- Statics pp. 101-107, Dynamics pp. 108-122, and Mechanics pp. 136-148: high-frequency mechanics setups.
- Mechanical Engineering pp. 442-472: design, springs, bearings, screws, transmission, fits, and GD&T.
Sections People Waste Time On
- Searching the Mechanical Engineering section for thermo, fluids, or heat transfer formulas that live earlier in the handbook.
- Searching broad words like "energy" or "power" instead of cycle, component, pump, fan, or shaft terms.
- Jumping into steam-table or psychrometric lookups before naming the process and known properties.
- Reading formulas passively instead of solving with the handbook open and recording the search terms that worked.
First-Week Lookup Drill
- Open your official NCEES FE Reference Handbook 10.6 copy beside your practice set.
- Pick the broad lane first: math, probability, economics, or the discipline-specific section.
- Jump to the page range in the topic map before searching the entire PDF.
- Search with short terms from this guide, such as "Machine Design", "Calculus", "Material Properties", "Integral", "Normal Distribution", "Time Value of Money". If a phrase does not match exactly, search the broader topic name instead.
- For mixed problems, follow the actual solve path: formula lookup, matrix solve, unit conversion, calculator workflow, or code/reference lookup.
How FE Test Prep Uses This Workflow
Our practice problems label the problem type, include quick formula references, and show calculator steps when they matter. The point is not to memorize every page. The point is to recognize the setup, know where to look, and then execute cleanly under time pressure.
